AN UNUSUAL SARDINIA: WELCOME TO SULCIS IGLESIENTE

Sulcis Iglesiente is one of the most authentic Sardinia. White escarpments, golden beaches, Mediterranean woods and snow-white dunes to be explored on foot, by mountainbike or on horseback. A landscape made of shafts and tunnels dug by man along veins of minerals and coal. with unique archaeological finds from ancient and fascinating civilisations, from the nuragic to the byzantine eras. Sulcis Iglesiente is the largest and most important italian mining area of the last centuries: in Sardinia there is the first Geomineral Park in the world to be recognized by UNESCO.

For the nature of its lead, zinc, silver and iron deposits in varying forms have made it a unique specimen, thus attracting researchers from the world over. The first geologists dubbed the area “the island within the island” for its testimonial dating back to the early Palaeozoic Age.

In its caves Sulcis Iglesiente engraved a genuin encyclopaedia of the earth which is open to all enthusiast of speleology, archaeology and adventure.

Trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, climbing and cycling enthusiasts will discover an extraordinary variety of untoiched and little frequented landscapes, from the mountains to the coast: from the Marganai massif to the woods of Pantaleo, the largest evergreen forest of europe, to Punta Pilocca, one of the best rock faces for climbing in Sardinia, which is certainly one of the most scenic ones along with the via ferratas on the coastal cliffs of Nebida, Masua and on the small island of Pan di Zucchero.

People who love the sea will not be disappointed. thanks to winds whose intensity and direction are costantly changing, the coasts of Sulcis Iglesiente are higly sought by those who love sailing and all its variants.

PORTO FLAVIA
 I siti minerari di Porto Flavia, Villa Marina, Museo delle Macchine di Miniera a Iglesias e Sos Enattos a Lula saranno visitabili dal 4 al 12 aprile.
Porto Flavia è un capolavoro di ingegneria mineraria unico al mondo. Venne progettato e realizzato dall'ingegnere Cesare Vecelli nel 1924. Flavia era la figlia di Cesare Vecelli. Grazie ad un innovativo sistema di carico del minerale direttamente nella stiva delle navi si ridussero i costi e i tempi di spedizione del minerale che fino ad allora veniva caricato a mano in piccole imbarcazioni e trasportato nell'isola di san Pietro dove poi veniva caricato nelle grandi navi. Vennero scavati 9 silos collegati ad una galleria superiore di carico, dove veniva portato il materiale con dei vagoncini ed una galleria inferiore di scarico, dotata di un nastro trasportatore che veniva proteso all'esterno all'arrivo delle navi, attraverso una finestra aperta nella falesia da cui il minerale veniva scaricato direttamente nella stiva delle navi.

The mining sites of Porto Flavia, Villa Marina, Museum of Mining Machinery in Iglesias and Sos Enattos Lula are open from 4th to 12th April.
Porto Flavia is a mining engineering work unique in the world. It was designed and built from the engineer Cesare Vecelli (Flavia is the name of Vecelli daugher) in 1924. This innovative charging system of the mineral allowed the loading directtly on ships in a few hours insead of days with small sailboats to the San Pietro Island. 9 silos were dug into the Limestone for the mineral storage, connected to an upper tunnel for loading and an other lower for downloading, where there was a conveyor belt that was stretched outward trough an open window in the Cliff to the discharge in the holds of ships.
